Guide to Autumn Attractions In San Diego

Guest post by: Andrew Burgess of Next Level Sailing

One of the best times to visit San Diego is in the fall. The weather is a little cooler than in the summer, but still very pleasant. Generally, there are fewer crowds because kids are back in school. If you have kids, you’ll find a lot of special deals in October because kids rule. The San Diego Zoo and many other local attractions offer free admission to kids under 11 years old. Some restaurants have free meals for kids as well. Some of the best whale watching San Diego months are in the fall. If you’re looking for something fun to do this fall, make sure to check out these activities and places.

SAN DIEGO BEER WEEK

The city is known for its craft beer, and Beer Week is the celebration of it all. It’s typically the first week in November. Even if you can’t make it during Beer Week, you’ll want to make sure to hit some local pubs where you can sample fresh-brewed beers made for Octoberfest. During Beer Week, you’ll find over 250 special events for beer lovers.

CABRILLO NATIONAL MONUMENT

This national monument celebrates the arrival of Europeans to the West Coast. The views are amazing because you can see San Diego Bay and downtown. It’s a lot of fun to go into the lighthouse and see the displays of what life was like in the 16th century. The real draw is the tide pools that you can enjoy at low tide to get a close up look at sea life.

VISIT THE TOWN OF JULIAN

The historic town of Julian is about an hour away from San Diego proper, but autumn is the best time to go. Not only does it have the fall colors of New England, but you can pick apples, drink fresh apple cider and shop in the downtown stores for just about anything apple. Check the calendar for the Apple Days festival and get some of the best apple pie in Southern California.

GET OUT ON THE WATER

Fall is a great time to enjoy the water. Take surf lessons. Sit out on the beach and read. Sign up for dinner on a boat San Diego to watch the whales, seals, dolphins and sea lions. Kellogg Park in La Jolla is a great place for kids to burn calories while playing. Scripps Pier offers tide pools where you’ll find all kinds of sea life. You’ll be rejuvenated from being close to water and nature.
