10 Things To Do In Lansing Michigan

I’ve been traveling full on for the past 3 years around the U.S. and around the world but most times I get 1-7 days to explore each destination. So getting to come back and take another deep dive into my hometown of Lansing Michigan has been an incredible treat. Every time I do, I’m blown away by the massive amount of things to see and do in this city and how much fun Lansing has become. Here are 10 awesome things to do in the capital city.

  1. Take in any one of the multiple incredible museums

From the MSU Museum on Campus to the Michigan History Center that takes you through the history of this amazing state, to R.E. Olds Transportation Museum that shows how Detroit wasn’t the only automobile city, to unique places like the Eli & Edythe Contemporary Art Museum or Impression 5 hands-on science center. This city really does have everything in terms of art and culture.

2. Try goat yoga!

Yes that is a thing! Goat yoga began back in 2016 and is quickly becoming a worldwide phenomenon. With only a handful of locations around the United States, if you’re in the Lansing area, take a class at Hilltop View Farms in Williamston. In the beautiful barn you’ll be treated to a great yoga class as well as, well, goats! These adorable, loving little creatures will climb, cuddle, and play around, behind, and even on top of you as you downward dog. It’s a combination of a workout class that’s good for your body, and some animal cuddles that are good for your soul.

3. Hit up one of the many unique bars or breweries.

Michigan is quickly marking it’s place on the map for being a beer master. You can find incredible beers all over the state and Lansing is no exception. From EagleMonk Pub to the brand new Midtown Brewing Co. to my personal favorite, Lansing Brewing Company every beer is delicious. And if beer isn't your thing, take in a handcrafted cocktail at American Fifth Spirits or the Michigrain Distillery.

4. Partake in some delicious grub!

If you’re already there for a beer you may as well sample some of the amazing food at the Lansing Brewing Company! Or any one of the other amazing new restaurants popping up all around the Lansing area. Everything from Meat Southern BBQ Co. that was featured on Diner Drive-in’s and Dives, Glazed and Confused's made-from-scratch donuts, or a juicy burger at Harrison Roadhouse. Lansing is quickly becoming a foodie town for every tastebud.

5. Enjoy a day at the zoo.

Potter Park zoo in Lansing is one of the cleanest, most well-kept zoo’s I’ve ever been to. The park itself is incredibly beautiful; running along the Grand River. The zoo holds over 160 species and over 500 animals. They also participate in many different conservation programs such as the Black Rhino Conservation, Puerto Rican Crested Toad Breeding, and Red Panda Day. One of my other favorite things about the zoo was the low admission cost that helps keep the zoo accessible to everyone.

6. Enjoy the Lansing River Trail.

This 20-mile paved trail stretches all the way from Waverly Road to Old Town and takes you through MSU campus, Potter Park Zoo, and Downtown Lansing. The best place to enjoy the trail is right in the heart of downtown at the Lansing City Market. Here you’ll find some incredible local shops, eateries, and drinks.

7. Choose your own adventure.

Rivertown adventures at the Lansing City Market offers Kayak, Bikes, and Stand-up paddle board rentals to take you down the river. There’s so much to see and no better way to see it than from the water. From MSU campus on the Red Cedar River to the Grand River that runs through downtown, you’ll see the city from a whole new perspective. And of course, earn those beers to enjoy at the City Market afterward.

8. Explore Michigan State University.

MSU has one of the most beautiful college campuses in America. Between the old brick buildings covered in Ivy, to the pristine sports stadiums and arenas, to some good ol’ fashioned homemade ice cream, Michigan State has a lot to offer. As a sports lover, I always recommend taking in a football or basketball game in new cities and I may be biased but there’s nothing like a good Big Ten game! If sports aren’t your thing, check out the MSU Museum or the Eli & Edythe Museum for some art and culture. And if you time it correctly, the East Lansing Art Walk is an incredible way to see what this city has to offer.

9. Check out a local festival.

There is ALWAYS something going on here in Lansing! In the 4 days I had to explore there was the Wine & Stein festival at Potter Park Zoo, 517 Day (a celebration of Lansing by using their area code as an excuse to celebrate), and the East Lansing Art Festival. Local events are such an amazing way to experience a destination by hanging out with the community and seeing what unique things that place offers.

10. Go to a Lugnuts Game.

I love minor league baseball. It’s such a fun outting and a cheaper way to do it than professional sports. And there’s so much less pressure surrounding the whole thing so it tends to just be a relaxed good time. With deals like $2 Tuesday hotdogs and $2 Thirsty Thursday beers you can’t go wrong!

I still find it hard to believe that I grew up right outside of Lansing and had no idea all of the incredible things this city has to offer. So much has built up in the last few years as well. So my suggestion is to book your trip and come check out this diamond in the rough while everything is so affordable and accessible. Trust me, one trip and you’ll see how amazing this capital city can be!
